Avid BB7 - Aug 14, 2014

NEWBURY PARK, CA

Of all the Avid products I have owned, the BB7 is the most reliable product in their brake lineup. Reliable, easy to adjust, easy pad replacement, solid build, VERY affordable. Not a light weight as other products, but hey, what's a few extra grams relative to the cost. Avid's hydraulic brake line? I am un-impressed - their Juicy line was not worth the $$$.

Well, my last review said I had both 180mm. However, I downsized to a 160mm rear to save some weight. The rotor of choice is a Hayes v5 160mm, I think, but it is a great combination with the caliper. I upgraded my brake levers to Shimano Acera, which is also a great combination! Overall, the combination on weight, power, and modulation is on my side until the pads wear out. Stopping power is almost the same as its new condition. I accidentally contaminated the front brake with pneumatic tool oil (which I use to lube my coil fork seals) and it was kinda hard to get out because it supposedly absorbed in the pads. It also caused it to fade on the rotor, so I will replace the front rotor and pads. Also, keep them pads clean!

Ease of Use - Jun 13, 2014

COLLEGE STATION, TX

The BB7s are very easy to adjust while on the trail and provide a confident brake feel. Setup when first installed was a bit tricky, from my experience the best way to prevent rotor rub is by first turning the inner pad closer by a full rotation of the adjustment knob, then bring the outer pad in to touching and back both out in order to get that solid brake feel.

wonderful wire brakes - Jun 10, 2014

AUSTIN, TX

I wanted a cheap solution for a solid wire disc brake setup and this fit the bill. I have only started just using it, so I have not had to use the adjustment knob, but I can tell that it will be more convenient than trying to fit an allen key through the spoke to make adjustments. The entire assembly is well made and it comes with the two brackets for various mounting positions as well as washers. It also comes with a rotor that I have not used yet, but am keeping as a backup (they are a bit heavy). They are well built calipers and have great spring actuation and I'm very happy with them paired with my avid SD-7s.

I've use hydrolics and BB7 brakes over the years. I've never had a problem with BB7's. I don't have to bleed anything, I'm not impacted by freezing temperatures, and it's super easy to work on the trail (if you need to).

Out of all of the disc brakes I've had or come across, this was by far the most easiest to set up and responsiveness with the addition of the speed dial levers made this just more sweeter.

SIMI VALLEY, CA

The ideal brake set up for those riders who desire all the benefits of disc brakes without the hassle of hydraulic maintenance. Avid is the best in regards to simplicity of installation. Requires very little to keep it going once set up. I am not a hard core rider, nevetheless, friends who are, rave about it as well. Get a set, install it, and have fun. You won't be disappointed!

BB7 Love Affair - Apr 30, 2014

Tucson, AZ

I bought an original set of these brakes when I did my first SS build. I was out to save $$, but I also knew a friend who had constant issues with his hydraulic actuated brakes. Being an aircraft mechanic by trade, I opted for this mechanical system. I have been riding, and racing this system now for going on six years I think. I have not had any issues. I like the system and its reliability, plus stopping power, and controllability so much, that I bought the latest and greatest for my new high-end build. A Niner, Air-9 Carbon, geared racing monster!

I just ordered two of these to put on my Specialized Rockhopper to replace the old hydraulic Magura brakes. They are great. I have always preferred mechanical brakes over hydraulic just for simplicity and easy tuning on the trail. These stop fast and fit perfect. I would recommend these to anyone who is looking for a good set of mechanical brakes that won't break the bank.

Avid BB7 Disc Brake Bargain - Apr 23, 2014

1 2 3 4 5
5 out of 5 stars
SPRING HILL, KS

What a great deal on these Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brake kits. I purchased one set for the front of my mountain bike with the 160mm disc, a long overdue upgrade from rim brakes to discs. After purchasing a new set of wheels equipped for discs, I was surprised at how easy the Avid BB7 front disc brake kit was to install and adjust during initial set-up. Once installed, I took my bike for an off-road test ride and was very impressed with the Avid kit's stopping power. Actually, I was so impressed, that when I got home, I went ahead and ordered an identical set of the Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brakes to replace my stock rim brakes on the rear, too! Installing the rear kit took a little trial and error, as the first mounting bracket I used of the two that were provided with the kit had the caliper rubbing on the top of the disc rotor. Once I swapped out the mounting bracket with the other bracket provided, the fit was perfect and there was plenty of rotor clearance and the brakes worked perfectly. With spring riding at the peak right now in my area and with the weather conditions being very unpredictable and wet, I am very confident, no matter rain or shine, that I can stop on a dime now, thanks to this pair of new Avid BB7 brake kits that I've installed. Overall, an excellent value for the performance and price.

I upgraded my stock brakes on my trek Marlin to these and were much better, but I still think spending a little more for hydraulic brakes would be worth it. I have adjusted and tuned these many times and just can't get the response I want.

Going from rim brakes...woah - Apr 09, 2014

1 2 3 4 5

Oakland, CA

I replaced my cheapo stock rim brakes with these (160R/180F + speed dial levers--also rec'd!), and what a world of difference it has made! Setup and adjustment was incredibly easy, despite never having installed disk brakes before. As for the ride experience, these brakes have given me the confidence to go from groomed singletrack to downhill, rock laden descents. The consistency, modularity and sheer power of these brakes has opened up a world of trails for me. If you're running rim brakes on your xc/trail bike and they just aren't cutting it, these will not disappoint. They might just amaze you. And, on a related note, I have tried my friend's (more expensive Hayes Stroker) hydraulic brakes, and he tried mine. I still preferred my BB7's, and when his Stroker's wore out he bought some BB7's. You simply cannot get better disc brakes at this price...or anywhere near it. Super highly recommended!

These brakes are awesome! I bought the 180 mm. set and they are more than perfect on my bike. The actuation is absolutely dialed and I love the feel. The simplicity in adjustments amazes me. The pads aren't even worn out yet. The only two things that annoy me are when dirt gather up in the pads and make an annoying squealing sound, and when they get wet with water, they make an annoying humming sound that vibrates the whole bike. Otherwise, I gave it five stars because it still brakes powerfully like when I got it!

I used these to replace my Hayes Stroker brakes when they failed. I was wary of switching my hydraulic to mechanical but after a couple hundred miles, these brakes have delivered! Great stopping power, easy adjustment, easy set up; these are the most reliable XC brakes that I've used and at an awesome price. Totally fail proof from what I've seen.

Easy setup, easy adjustments, easy pad replacement, better stopping than my stock brakes...important for a clyde going downhill! The hardware even comes pretreated with appropriate threadlock. Works fine with my stock levers but looking forward to complementing them with some Speed Dials. Have a bigger T25 driver for easier installation. Mine was missing so had to make do with the small one it came with.

Have had these for years, never had an issue. Install and adjustment are super easy, lever feel and modulation are spot on. Hydraulics might feel a little smoother at the lever, but for the price and ease of maintenance/reliability you can't go wrong with these bad boys...

My dad bought these brakes because I had VERY cheap stock disc brakes with really small pads. These brakes are cool, easy to press, and I love the features. The only thing is I have to replace my rear disc brake because the caliper on the left side is permanently tweaked. Not a bad brake, and has EXCELLENT stopping power compared to my other brakes.

Love my BB7s - Jun 21, 2013

5 out of 5 stars
TUSTIN, CA

I love these brakes. My first "real" mountain bike came with hydraulic brakes, but they were super touchy and hard to maintain. I felt like I was always adjusting them and my rotor was constantly rubbing. I decided to try the BB7s and haven't looked back since. These brakes rock! They are super easy to setup and adjust. If your brake starts to rub for some reason on the trail, you can adjust these WITHOUT TOOLS! If you get the adjustable brake levers, you can even adjust the modulation (how hard you have to pull to stop) in a snap. Plus, they are relatively inexpensive. There are lots of good youtube videos and plenty of information online to help with setup as well. I will never go back to hyrdraulic brakes unless they make them as "adjustable-on-the-fly) as these.

BB7 Brakes - May 23, 2013

5 out of 5 stars
AVONDALE, AZ

I recently ditched my rear hydraulic shimano brake & plan to do the front as well. I pared this BB7 with the Avid Speed Dial 7 Brake levers. Some say it is a down grade. I chose to do this for reliability and ease of maintenance reasons. I have a 29er hardtail & went with the big 200mm rotor on the rear. I know most of the braking is on the front rotor but again I chose this for longevity & low maintenance. The Brakes pull is smooth and strong, no sudden surprises or overheating with this big rotor. The hydraulics does pull a little longer & with "slightly" less effort but I LOVE the BB7's & plan to do the front soon! Totally worth the price & PricePoint shipped FAST!
