The 5050 series pedals were completely redesigned by Crank Brothers in 2012. The 5050 "2" is the more budget oriented pedal, but still gets the two piece aluminum + polycarbonate platform and is much lighter than before.
Straight out of the box, these things consistently come with slop in the bearings. That only gets worse as you ride. Also, no pedal wrench flats. There is nothing wrong with pedal wrench flats. Dear pedal manufacturers: please put flats on more high end pedals. It does not make the pedals look less sleek or something. It makes them look respectable and functional.
Pretty light comfortable platform. Non replaceable axles killed it for me. Axle not the strongest one good pedal strike and in the trash they go.
These pedals are well worth the money. They have a strong, thin profile and are fairly lightweight. Most importantly, they are really grippy. Even in slick, muddy conditions, my shoes stick onto these platforms really well. They have helped me to become a more confident rider on more rugged terrain, and look pretty sick to boot! Highly recommended.
