Diamondback Sortie Black 29in Bike 2014

The Sortie 29er was inspired by Diamondback's beloved Sortie 26” platform. The goal, simple: retain ride characteristics of the Sortie trail platform while adding the benefits of a larger diameter wheel. Not a simple task by any means but what they've come up with is a bike that’s being hailed as one of the best 29inch bikes on the market. Diamondback’s Design Philosophy is a no-nonsense approach to building quality bicycles. They want their bike designs to be straightforward: their hardware accessible and their suspension simple. Diamondback’s Sortie29 Black is their crème de la crème top shelf offering as far as 29er’s go – heck, almost as far as bikes go… period. This 6061-T6 Weapons Grade Aluminum frame features a hydroformed top tube, a butted and formed downtube, a seatstay bridge, tapered headtube, a 142×12mm E-Thru Axle drop out and Diamondback’s legendary Knuckle Box Suspension technology.

Going from a 5” travel 26er to a 29er, I quickly saw the benefits of the bigger wheel size-rolls over everything, larger tire contact area, and faster rolling. Even with my 5’6” stature on the size small, I never felt like the bike was too much to handle. It felt very stable rolling over chunky terrain and comfortable on the climbs. I was skeptical about the suspension design but the Knuckle Box suspension bombed down technical sections with no hesitation, plowing through the dry, loose, rocky SoCal terrain with ease. The Sortie Black is spec’d with the best of the best, including the stellar XX1 drivetrain, XX brakes, and Crankbrothers Cobalt wheelset. This is hands down the cleanest, simplest shifting ever and had very reliable braking. I would not upgrade anything. The Sortie Black performs like a bike that should cost much more than what’s advertised. Considering the high-end build spec and confident inspiring ride, I strongly recommend this for someone looking for a reliable, super stable, all-day trail machine but also wanting the best bang for their buck.
