Easton EC90 Aero 56mm Tubular Rear Wheel 2013

This is the ultimate, every-day aero wheel. The EC90 Aero is fast enough to win time trials, stable in windy triathlons and untouchable in long breakaways. The EC90 Aero combines the unbeatable braking performance of Easton's proprietary ThermaTec brake track (providing smooth, easily-modulated braking power) with a fiercely-fast 56-millimeter tall rim. In addition to the tall rim profile, EC90 Aero wheels feature a low spoke count (18-front; 20-rear) and hidden spoke nipples (tubular only) providing a significant, wind cheating advantage. Best of all these wheels offer dependable handling in a variety of conditions. Thanks to their depth and durability, the EC90 Aero has also become a favorite of cyclocross racers. Sealed R4 SL hubs with alloy axles, alloy freehubs and ceramic bearings round-out the package on these top-notch race wheels. Like every Easton wheel, the EC90 Aero is entirely hand built and acoustically tuned in Easton's own factory.

Okay, so after buying a carbon wheelset that was a total letdown last year, I swore off carbon wheels for a bit. Then I found these on massive sale and totally caved. I have to admit that I'm extremely happy with my poor decision-making skills. People throw around words like "featherweight" all too much nowadays. Everything is light compared to the stock wheels that come on most bikes. But these, well, these are scary-light. Most of my team are on carbon wheels, but when these come out of the bag, everyone knows I'm serious. I have them glued to Veloflex Extreme tubulars and the results are almost NSFW. I bought them to do time trials and flatter road races. I figured the light weight and low spoke count would mean a delicate, flimsy wheel. Unfortunately, my wheel-maker is uber-slow and I didn't have wheels for crit season. So I threw these on, paired with a EC90 SL front wheel. These are fast, solid wheels. I'm a 180# sprinter and could barely flex these in the sprint. They spin-up ungodly fast and can handle the argy-bargy of going 7-wide into the final turn. Braking? Honestly, no carbon wheel is going to be as good as Al wheels, especially in the rain. Get over it. However, I've raced these in the rain and have total confidence in them. They come with SwissStop Yellow pads and the combination is superlative. Just keep in mind that a) the smell is terrible when you brake and b) you'll lose a disturbing amount of brake pad. The SwissStop pads aren't cheap and wear down fast. On the other hand, they work very well and any other brake pad will void the warranty. Yeah, these are Race Day Only wheels, but they perform like it and, honestly, are tough enough for everyday use.

This review is for front+rear set, purchased in 2011. I am very satisfied with this purchase. I am approx. 200 lbs and these wheels are bomb-proof. No broken spokes, no problems at all. Light, spin up quickly, smooth as silk ride with nice tubulars. One small minus would be the brake pads that come with the wheels. They are Easton badged, but are in fact Swiss Stop Yellows. I find that these stick on the rim and are noisy. I've replaced mine with BBB carbon-specific pads, which do a much better job. Stopping is never on par with aluminum wheels, but more than adequate. I have not ridden any other aero carbon wheels, but these are a marked improvement over any alu set I've had. Recommended without reservation.
