Hayes Prime Pro Disc Brake
It's here. And it's the first of its kind. PRIME hydraulic disc brakes feature industry-first technologies and offer more power, new components and a better ride. PRIME's tool-free reach and contact adjustment, improved braking torque and feel and outstanding ergonomics are just a few of its many attributes. Plus, its ground-breaking, high-flow reservoir venting system has never been seen before.
Had them 6 months. The pluses: Great modulation, plenty of adjustments, good stopping power. The Problems: Reach adjustment jammed in the same time period. I like these brakes, they have a huge modulation zone compared to Avids and Shimanos. Take a little more squeeze (almost not worth mentioning) to completely lock up a wheel. However I bought these mainly for the tool-less adjustments and price. Reach adjust on both brakes has seized up (front is somewhat adjustable - couple clicks before it stops either way), it seems like the small bearing that creates the notches is jammed up. I am trying to warranty them, I will see how that goes.
The adjustability of these brakes is unbelievable! Easy to install and they work awesome on my 26" and 27.5" MTB. You cannot go wrong with these brakes and the Hayes rotors.
The design looks exactly the same as the Stroker Grams, but the functionality has changed for the positive. The ability to widen path for the pads being one addition that is greatly appreciated. No more .005mm separation between the pads and rotor. That may mean little to some, but the Hayes rotors tend to run thick and have pretty much near to no space to the pad contact. You definitely have to break in these brakes as you'll note some screeching or they'll stop you dead. After break in the modulation is perfect.
I guess now I'm blaming the pads because when I changed em these brakes seem much better. They don't squeal nearly as much. This model is much less tolerant of a slightly warped rotor than are Hopes or Maguras (I've had several pairs of each), and perhaps higher end Hayes... but more less trouble than Avid Juicys (lol)... However at about the same time I bought these, I bought a pair of Stroker Aces for me Heckler. Those brakes are worth every cent. They seem to be modeled after Hope M4s in many respects. The Prime Pros are lighter, but the adjustments are not very dynamic, and they just don't feel as powerful as the Stroker Aces, even though they cost a good deal more at the time. I still haven't tossed em and don't think about em too much, which is a positive for brakes, but they wouldn't be my first choice, even within the typically great Hayes product line.
I can't say enough about these brakes. Terrific. Adjustment is sweet.
Bought these a year ago and they've been THE BEST I've ever owned. I used to roll with Avids, just because that's what originally came on my first bike. BUT, I decided to go off course and run with Hayes and have been happier since.
I bought this brake for my dirt jumper. I hadn't used a Hayes product in years, so I figured I would give them a shot. In short, the brake was okay, but I would not buy one again. The adjustments are nice, functional, and easy to use. However, the bite point adjustment is useless for people with small hands, as the lever travels into my knuckles or into the bar if the knob is anything but bottomed out. Stopping power is reasonable and could likely be improved with different pads. However these brakes would not cut it on a fast and steep decent, or on a 6 inch+ travel bike. I tried this brake on a couple different bikes (DJ, AM Hardtail, and my 7 inch FR bike), with different rotor sizes (6, 7, and 8 inch), and was not impressed by its performance. My Elixir CR's, Juicy Fives, very old Hayes Nines, and Code R's all blew this brake out of the water. These brakes are suitable for XC applications, but I would not use them for AM, FR, or DH. Overall, these brakes are okay. They worked as expected right out of the box, but post-burnish braking power was surprisingly similar to pre-burnish braking power. There are better brakes out there for the money.
Purchased these brakes about one week ago and I have to say they are outstanding so far. The Modulation on them is superb and they are adjustable on the fly using no tools. I would highly recommend them.
One year and still working without problem. If you are looking for top quality and good price this is the best option. Thanks Hayes...thanks PRICE Point!
Buy this Prime Pro and you will have the best. Bought them 1 year ago and no regrets. Riding black diamonds? No problem!!! Mud? Sand? Rain? No problem!!! Looking for best price? You are at right place...Price Point!!! Thanks Hayes...thanks Price Point, you are the best!
I love these brakes!!!! They feel smoother than any other brake I have ever used and are cheaper here than anywhere else. The one finger adjustment capability is awesome as well. You can not go wrong with these brakes for anything from CC to Extreme All Mountian riding.

I purchased the Hayes Prime Pros 9 months ago. They are great and have lots of power and are easy to adjust. I love the feel of the levers. Last month I lost my rear brakes. I sent them in to Hayes and they fixed it. I had them back on the bike in 5 days. Fast turn around and the customer support is A+++++. Great job Hayes.
It's great how easily adjustable these are on the fly. No tools necessary and even with gloves on you can adjust the pull and reach on the levers. They come with cable that was plenty long, but the only downside of that is that it negates fact that they come pre-bled because we still have to bleed the. After shortening the cables anyhow. Hopefully the cables fit your frame perfectly!
When building a bike this was among the last parts on the list and I was glad to find they installed fast, without any drama whatsoever. Alignment was done in a minute too. Have not tried them yet on a trial but they seem to have good modulation and are very easy to adjust without tools! They are not the lightest but I am very happy with the quality. Good job Hayes!
I have been looking for a brake with the power and feel of this one for some time. Glad to say I found it with the Prime Pro. Awesome feel, very adjustable, great bleed from the factory, and good power. I have used them for quite a few all mountain type outings, never had any issue. I haven't had them on any full on long DH runs, but I wouldn't doubt them for a second. I have the 7 inch rotors on a 2009 Dakar XAM frame. Great brakes, great price.
Very reliable product. Double black diamonds trails? No problem! Mud,rain, sand or rock garden the Hayes Pro make its work...and best of all...a really good price!
This is a follow up to my first review. I neglected to mention the Hayes Prime Pro brakes are mounted on a 2010 Kona 120 Supreme with 6 inch rotors and Fox Suspension that I built from a frame. I now have well over 100 trail miles on these brakes...including 22 miles on some of the hairier runs at Galbraith Mountain in Bellingham Washington. The Prime Pros definitely have stopping power...and have the best modulation I have ever felt. I definitely have better control and confidence in all situations.
Super brake set. Easy to install. The reach adjustment is slick and precise as is the "on-the-fly" throw adjustment. These adjustments allow the brake engagement performance to vary from moderate to "over the bars" aggressive. Modulation of these brakes is superb. These brakes are replacing a set of Hayes 9 Carbons which I loved...and in 7+ years never even needed to be bled...but parts are no longer available. My only desire would be a carbon lever...because my fingers stay warmer in the winter. At this price $130 the Hayes Prime Pro is probably the best brake you can buy.
