The SRAM X9 Type 2 adds the Roller Bearing Clutch to a normal X.9 derailleur to deliver maximum drivetrain stability, even through rough terrain. This clutch eliminates bounce and chain slap without sacrificing precision. Clutch is self-lubricating, maintenance free, uses needle bearings, and comes factory calibrated from SRAM.
Buying a rear new derailleur? Need shifters? We have those! Take a look at our selection of shifters here.
I set up my bike 1x10 with 11-40 cassette conversion, and I have to say that Sram X9 medium cage works really well with it. It has fast and smooth shifting action. Look very good and the price is very acceptable.
I set up my new 29er hardtail as a 1x10 with an X9 short-cage derailleur, 11-36 cassette, and a 28 tooth Bling Ring. The drivetrain is super quiet. I have an older bike with a X0 9-speed drivetrain and it makes a lot more noise. It makes my new 10-speed bike feel really solid and the quiet drivetrain adds a real quality feeling to my new bike.
I bought this to replace...the exact same part on my 2013 Giant Trance X 29er. Well at least i thought it was the same part. Giant had put the long cage version on their bike, and i had assumed it was the medium. The Med. cage has made a huge difference, snappier shifts and quiet. Don't understand why the bike came with the long to begin with, but the rule of 2 rings = Med Cage holds true for a reason. Looking forward to wearing this one out this summer.
Ive used XT, X7, X9, and other lower level derailleurs before, but this one takes the cake. Zero chain slap, not one dropped chain in very rocky and rooty conditions. Held up perfectly when I dropped off a log and landed dead on to the cage. The cable routing is a plus, no giant loop at the tail of the bike.
Purchased to replace an x7 10 speed for a Norco Revolver 29er thanks to a sale. Shifts faster and more consistently under load, if you ride trails or rough terrain definitely lean towards a Type 2 dérailleur over a standard the higher price is worth it. It is far less prone to chain slap and feels like it picks up the tension after a shift faster, the cage lock is a godsend for removing the rear wheel. Compared to my 9 speed X9 from a few years ago they've made a significant improvement by adding the clutch. My only complaint is that the Type 2 Dérailleurs are 10 speed only.
What a major difference this type 2 derailleur makes over older designs that don't have the clutch feature to maintain chain tension during all conditions. This derailleur eliminated chain slap on my frame, miss shifts & issues with chain dropping off he Chain Ring. Shifts are smooth & quick. The cable routing minimizes shift cable binding seen on other other designed derailleurs.
Bought this to replace a X-7 that was damage when I sucked a chain. Definitely an upgrade from the X-7. Cage lock to lock in full extension makes tire removal and chain work a lot easier.
I bought the X9 when I decided to go from a 2x10 X7 drivetrain to a 1x10 because this has the clutch in it. I couldn't be happier with my decision!!! I'm running the X9 type 2 with a RaceFace 32T narrow/wide. I put my bike back together Thursday 4/24/14 after I purchased a bunch of new parts, I had an endurance race on Saturday 4/26/14 and I am so impressed how flawlessly this deraillleur performed! I did not miss one shift, I never dropped a chain, and to be honest my bike far out performed me!!! Do not hesitate to buy this derailleur, especially if you are thinking about running a 1x10 drivetrain with no chain guide! Also the little lock out is an awesome feature, makes taking off and putting on your back wheel so much easier.
This unit provides quiet trouble free long term shifting. The clutch eliminates chain noise and slap. It's so good I put the same on my Cyclocross bike.
I picked this up because I was converting my FS 29er to 1x10, and wanted a clutched rear derailleur to help my new wide/narrow ring keep the chain where it was supposed to be. This was an upgrade from and X.7 that I never had trouble with, but the first thing I noticed was how smooth (nearly unnoticeable) shifts were with this thing installed. The second thing I noticed when attacking a rooty section of a local trail, was that I couldn't hear my chain slapping around anymore. Lastly, it's well worth pointing out that I haven't dropped a chain with this in place, even riding trails as notoriously rocky as Reddish Knob.
I had great hopes for this derailleur but it broke on the very first ride. The piece the derailleur cage mounts to is plastic and it cracked. No broken chain or foreign object, it just jammed up and broke My previous derailleur was a Shimano XTR that lasted for 13 years in the exact same riding conditions and severe countless broken derailleur hangers. That derailleur is still in better condition than my new X9 I would not recommend this derailleur or any SRAM drivetrain components to anyone unless they have the money to replace components every ride.
Have had this derailleur on my bike for about 2 months and have not yet dropped a chain on rough terrain shifts smooth and fast.
it's not top of the line but it performs like it. Quick, quiet and accurate along with a build quality that is top notch, this is a great derailleur!
Got this for my 1x10 build and I love having a clutched derailleur! I never have chain slap and it makes riding single track so much more enjoyable. Its not worth buying XO because all you're doing is shaving a few grams for double the price and all it takes is one rough encounter with mother nature to foul up your derailleur forcing you to replace it. I do however run an XO shifter pod, and I always get sharp responsive shifting from the setup.
Hey everyone, I don't review very many products because they often don't warrant it, but this is one component upgrade that has made a significant difference in my performance. Besides losing that every annoying chain slap, being able to focus on the trail ahead, and enjoy the rustle of the leaves as I rush over them; this products shifts superbly. I have it couple with the X9 shifter and have not had any problems even after numerous wipeouts. Of course I have to make the occasional barrel adjustment due to cable stretch, but that is it. Rest assured that you will not be disappointed with this shifter. Happy trails
Smooth shifting and reduces chain slap, which is very important with a carbon frame.
This derailleur works great! Shifts smooth and reduced chain slap to almost none. An affordable way to go with a 1X10 setup. XO technology with out the associated cost. I highly recommend it.
This derailleur is great bang for buck. The clutch eliminates chain slap and keeps the entire drivetrain quiet. An X0 doesn't have much different than the X9 besides a few less grams and a carbon cage. Get the X9-Type2 and never look back.
