If you're converting a mountain bike to single speed, and you want to eliminate the other chain rings, you need these bolts. It makes for a very clean install and appearance when you're done. I used them on my Specialized Rock Hopper conversion, and the end result was much better than those I've seen where they left the middle chain ring or tried to use washers. One of my goals in converting to single speed was to eliminate any parts (weight) that weren't needed, and these helped with that goal.
