The new Shimano XTR Race pedals are all about maximizing output and efficiency by connecting you to your bike like never before. Boasting four times more shoe/pedal contact area than the previous generation XTR pedal, the Race pedals channel every ounce of your effort to your rear wheel. The refined design retains all the time-tested and race-proven functionality SPD is famous for, and adds a slimmer axle profile to reduce weight and increase mud-shedding capability. These new pedals also provide a lower and more bio-mechanically correct platform height, which more efficiently transfers power to the drivetrain while picking up precious millimeters of ground clearance at the same time.
These pedals are light and smooth. They're big enough to use with street shoes on a short trip to the corner store, and great for cross country riding. I have them on my all mountain bike and I find they are a little skittish going through some trickier downhills & root drops. I use the SM-SH56 cleats, maybe that's part of the reason. Shimano says they're compatible with these pedals but side release just happens a little too easily even after trying several adjustments.
Purchased these pedals as a replacement to egg beaters that I've been riding and racing for the past 4 years. The XTR engagement is fantastic, very solid feeling pedal with a larger platform. Not as light as the egg beaters, but worth the trade off. Love the adjustable tension release on the XTR's.
