Shimano WH-R501 A Clincher Wheelset

Shimano's budget-friendly wheelset offers an impressive level of performance combined with a superb new look.

The Shimano R501 wheelset features a 24mm rim depth that's strong and aerodynamic without weighing you down, and a built-in wear indicator lets you know when it's time for a replacement. Traditional stainless steel straight gauge spokes with 20/24 front/rear, laced radially and 3x respectively for a great combination of strength, stiffness and style.

The hub design uses trickle down technology from Shimano's high-end groups with a heavy-duty steel axle and ball bearings for easy serviceability. A new seal system delivers reliable all-conditions performance, and sets this model apart from its predecessor, the R500.

700c (15-622mm ISO). Shimano/SRAM 8/9/10 speed compatible.

Worth The Price - Apr 30, 2014

This is an entry level road bike wheelset. The wheels are heavy and built for the new road cyclist. If you're just starting out, or you're looking to replace an out of date/well used wheelset then this is a solid investment. Don't go this route if you're a rider who plans to put on 50-200 miles on per week. This wheelset is for the rider putting 50-200 miles on per month. Also, if you weigh over 225lbs you would likely want a wheelset that can handle your weight, and I wouldn't recommend this one.

Decent trainers, bargain price - Apr 23, 2014

I bought these about a year ago to replace my old cracked Mavic CXP22s. These are awesome for the price and are great as daily riders/trainers. I switch them out with better wheels for race day. I got the newer model which is smooth, but a little flexy in high speed cornering. These have stayed true after one year and about 6k miles. I would recommend these for anyone looking to get a big brand name on a decent set of wheels at a bargain price. They are heavy and would not recommend for serious competition.

Good entry level wheelset - Apr 23, 2014

I've used these wheels on my CX and touring bike for a year now and I've found them to be a great wheelset for the money. They are probably not the lightest or the stiffest, however they have stayed true even with carrying 30-40 lbs of gear over rough roads and my 200lb weight. Very happy with them so far.

Cheap but round. - May 29, 2013

These will get you around town if you absolutely can't spend any more money. Considering the price, they are perfectly fine. They stay true well enough, but they do flex a lot in the corners and are heavy as snot. The bearing loading is less forgiving than the higher model Shimanos. Fast and loose is the motto; you have to invoke a little play to escape friction at all. If you get these, please open a savings account for better wheels later.
