Urge Down-O-Matic Veggie Full Face Helmet
You've heard of Veggie-burgers?
At Urge Bikeproducts, they have the Veggie-helmets!
Some of their models carry this strange name....
It is actually both a simple and audacious idea. For their Veggie models, they replace a part of the glass fiber generally used to manufacture full-face helmets by a 100% natural and vegetable fiber: the linen fiber. Linen (Linum usitatissimum) is a plant that produces really pretty blue flowers and grows in fields with low water needs, without fertilizer or chemical products. From this plant, they can extract oil but also fiber. This (long) fiber is weaved using highly technical processes and enables them to manufacture fabrics that, once molded a certain way and adding their expert knowledge, have very close characteristics to glass or carbon fabrics.
But unlike these two fabrics, the linen fiber is natural, requires low energy to be produced and its waste is compostable with no danger to the environment and it is non-allergic. The end result is very eye-catching, very strong and good for the Earth and human kind.
That's why, even if this fiber is extremely difficult to work with and it costs as much time and money as carbon, Urge thinks that it's the right decision for a better future and they will do their best to use it even more.
