Giro Prolight Helmet
The first time you hold the Giro Prolight in your hands your first instinct will be to put it down and pick it up again just to confirm its unbelievably low weight. The Prolight is by far the lightest helmet on the planet.
When the Prolight arrived here at Price Point, it immediately entered the hallowed realm of being one of the products that everyone wanted to check out. After a couple folks tried it on, we noticed a pattern develop. Helmet goes on, jaw hits the floor.
Giro got the weight so low by jettisoning weight anywhere and everywhere. The Roc Loc 4 has been replaced by the Roc Loc SL. The standard nylon straps that we know and love have been kicked to the curb for an ultra thin Italian set. Even the little plastic Tri-Loc buckles have been sent off to greener pastures.
This low weight does come at a compromise. How big of a compromise will depend on your personal preference.
As you've probably noticed, the Prolight's vents aren't nearly as big as its Ionos or Atmos brethren. The reason for this is because the Prolight doesn't make use of the composite reinforcing sub-frame that allows for Ionos and Atmos to have such massive vents. Removing the sub-frame saves weight but more EPS material is required for the Prolight to pass CPSC and CE EN safety tests with flying colors.
Giro compensates for this by specking the Prolight with 25 specially designed Wind Tunnel vents for optimum air flow and aerodynamics. Is it as ventilated as the Atoms or Ionos? Not quite. But it's still ventilated as heck and is a lot lighter. Take a look at any footage from the Prolight's debut at the 2009 Tour de France and you'll notice a pretty even split between riders using the Prolight and the Ionos.
In the end, the choice is yours. If you want the lightest helmet possible, you've found it. If you value ventilation above all you'll probably want to mosey over to the Ionos.
