>Helmets/Gloves
Do I have to wear a helmet?
Your helmet is your most important piece of safety equipment, and
yes, you should always wear it when you ride. If you ride enough
miles, you are bound to have an ugly crash eventually. Statistics
tell us that serious riders, on average, have a bad crash about every
2,000 miles, and we all know there’s no escaping statistics. When
you go down hard, your helmet can save your life, period.
Helmet laws vary from state to state for bicyclists, check your local
and state laws for detail. In California, riders under the age of
18 are required be law to wear helmets when riding a bicycle. There
is no California law pertaining to adult cyclists.
Helmet Sizes

How do I measure my glove size?
Hold your palm out flat and use a tape measure around your hand at
its fullest point, not including your thumb. Use the following chart
to convert to standard glove sizing.

>Body Armor
Body armor for mountain biking includes items
such as knee and shin guards, elbow guards, and chest protectors.
There are even complete armored suits and pants designed for downhillers.
We highly recommend these items if you are racing downhill, free-riding,
or training on extremely technical terrain.
Body armor is constructed in a variety of materials – from simple
foam padding, to neoprene (wetsuit material), to hard plastic or metallized
shells to protect you from impacts. This all depends on the level
of comfort and protection you want.

>Hydration Systems
What is the advantage of hydration systems
over traditional water bottles?
Hydration systems, such as those made by HydraPak and CamelBak, allow
you to carry more liquid when you ride. They keep your beverage clean
and easily accessible, even when you’re riding on technical trails
that require you to keep both hands on the bars. They also keep your
water or beverage of choice cool for a longer period of time because
they are insulated.
How do I clean out my hydration pack’s bladder?
Put a few drops of bleach in water and pour into the bladder. Let
this sit for a few hours, then wash. Make sure you rinse carefully.
Preventative maintenance is the best – clean out after every ride.
If you use a sports drink, this will increase the possibility of funny
things growing.
Many people keep their bladders in the freezer when not in use as
this discourages bacterial growth. These brushes were designed specifically
for cleaning hydration pack reservoirs. The large brush easily cleans
inside the reservoir, while the smaller brush allows a convenient
way to clean the inside of the drinking tube.

>Other Accessories
What other accessories will improve my cycling
performance and enjoyment?
From necessities such as gloves and grips to great training aids like
Cyclo-computers, heart rate monitors, and stationary trainers for
rainy days, you’ll find all kinds of must-have items in our accessories
section. Whether you’re looking for tools, lubes, bags, or car racks,
it’s all here. And we’re adding new items all the time, so be sure
to check back often. We even have Gift Certificates if you can’t
decide what to get for that special cyclist.
What are the purposes/functions of Cyclo-computers and heart rate
monitors?
Computers are used by the rider to obtain basic trip data, such as
distance, time, current and maximum speed, time and average speed.
Some computers even have a cadence option to see how many pedal revolutions
you are doing. There are models that are wireless, or you may prefer
the traditionally wired type of system.
HRMs (heart rate monitors) are used by the rider to track the heart
rate while exercising. The use of an HRM has become an increasingly
important method of training and maintaining fitness. A HRM (Heart
Rate Monitor) unit has two parts, a strap with a unit that fits around
the chest of the user and a receiver unit that fits on the wrist or
bike handlebar.
