>Seatpost Sizing

How can I tell what size seat post I need?

Generally, the size will be stamped at the bottom of your current seat post.  Most seat posts have the size stamped into them. If you remove the post from the bike, it should be stamped near the maximum height line. If it's not there, your local bicycle dealer or the manufacturer of your frame can help you determine the proper size.

>Seatpost Installation

How do I install my new seat post and set it to the appropriate height?

Be sure to use a little grease so the seat post doesn’t seize and you can adjust it easily.  The basic formula for finding the right seat height is this:  When you are sitting comfortably on the saddle with the balls of your feet on the pedals, your knees should have a very slight bend in them (they should not be locked).  If you then put your heels on the pedals, your legs should be straight, almost to the point where your knees lock, but not quite.

How do I get my seat post back to the same height if it is moved?

It’s a good idea to mark your ideal seat height on the seat post (with a Sharpee pen, for example), so that if your seat is moved (like if someone else rides it or if you have the bike serviced at a shop), you can find that sweet spot again with minimal effort.

>Suspension Seatposts

Is a suspension seat post right for me?

There are several suspension seat posts available that will add comfort and pushiness to the ride of a hardtail frame.  In a sense, they can give some rear-suspension advantages to a front-suspension-only bike.  This will make a difference in the ride only when you are seated – this type of suspension will not engage if you are standing on your pedals (as you should be) while descending a steep or technical section of trail.

>Seatpost Materials: Alloy, Carbon, etc.

What materials are used for seat posts?

Typical seat posts are alloy, or a combination of metals designed for strength and stiffness.  For lighter weight while maintaining these features, some manufacturers offer seat posts constructed of carbon fiber or even titanium.
