>Sizing

What are standard sizes for road rims/tires and mountain rims/tires?

Road rims are 700c, all the road tires we sell will fit this size rim.

Mountain rims are 26", all the mountain tires we sell will fit a standard 26" mountain rim.

Are 650c and 26" rims/tires interchangeable/compatible?

While it would seem that these sizes are close enough to be interchangeable, no, they are not compatible.

>Tread

What kind of tire tread is good for the riding I do?

As with many choices, this all depends on your riding style, and the conditions of the trails in your area.  You may choose to go with a lightweight tire with minimal tread if you mostly ride fire roads and well-maintained trails.  If you are a downhillers or freerider, you are bound to prefer a wider (and heavier) tire with a more aggressive tread pattern.  Should I use a different front and rear tire?

Some tires are designed specifically for front wheel and /or rear wheel use.  Some can be used for either.  Many tires are directional, so be careful to install them so the tread runs in the right direction.  If you use the same tire for your front and rear wheel, you might even try reversing the tread on the front wheel, it works well with some designs.  If you need help selecting, you may call our sales department at (800) 774-2376 or (310) 323-4256.

>Schrader vs. Presta Valves

What is the difference between Schrader and Presta valves?

A Presta valve is thinner and made of metal the spring is actuated by the air pressure inside of the tube. Presta tubes are generally considered easier to fill.

The Schrader valve is the same type as on your car tire. It uses an actual spring assembly to keep the air in the tube. Big advantage to a Schrader valve is that you can use a gas station pump on every street corner in America to fill it. This is not a substitute for carrying a pump with you, particularly if you have a mountain bike, as there are few Gas stations off road!

How can I tell when a tire is sufficiently inflated?

Most bikers are used to a certain pressure of the tire they are inflating. This pressure equal the "hardness" of the tire as it is inflated. I know this seems mysterious if you aren't used to this, but it is a sense quickly developed. For road, you want the tire to be hard when you press in with your thumb. Mountain is different, as some like their tires "hard" and some run their tires soft. Every time that you pump up your tires with your floor pump, give the tire a squeeze and get a feel for the hardness of your tires. With experience, you'll get used to this and won't have a problem when you're fixing a flat.

>Tubeless Tires

Are tubeless tires for mountain bikes the wave of the future?

Some would say so, they do seem to be gaining in popularity.  Tubeless tires require rims that are specified for them, so make sure you have compatible equipment before you try to go tubeless.

What is the difference between clincher and tubular road tires?

A clincher tire has a separate tube and tire. This type of tire is much easier to mount and change in case of a flat. All you need to do is to change the tube while leaving the tire on the rim. This type of tire is used by the majority of bike riders

A tubular tire contains the tube and tire in one. It requires a special rim and needs to be mounted and glued in a laborious process. However, the ride of a tubular is more supple. If you flat with a tubular, you'll have to take off the whole tire and replace it with a new one.  Tubular tires are sometimes referred to as sew-ups, because originally they could actually be repaired, by a very skilled hand, with a needle and thread, but this has become a lost art.  Today, tubulars are mostly used by racers and professionals.
